Where in Kaliningrad
to go for a walk?

Botanical Garden
With the arrival of May, the Botanical Garden in Kaliningrad opens its gates to everyone who wants to relax in the lap of nature. It is an ideal place for unhurried walks among the greenery, especially in the warm season. If you want to take shelter from the city bustle and heat and enjoy the blossoms and the quiet, be sure to drop by.
Where to walk in Kaliningrad if you want seclusion and beauty? Of course, in the Botanical Garden — a green corner of the city with a centuries-old history and the scent of flowering trees.
The garden was founded in 1904, when Kaliningrad was still called Königsberg and belonged to Germany. It was created as a university garden at the famous Albertina University — the oldest university in Prussia. After the Second World War the city became part of the Soviet Union and the Albertina was closed, but the garden survived. Later it was transferred to the Immanuel Kant Baltic Federal University, which owns it to this day.
Right after the entrance it is worth turning right — a delicate pink weigela grows there. Behind it are flower beds with yellow, blue and white flowers. A little further on, graceful magnolia trees rise.

If you walk around the garden along the right side, you will reach the centre — irises, larches and ornamental shrubs spread out here. In the background is a greenhouse with plants, including a collection of cacti.

Several paths radiate from the centre of the garden. Along their edges grow tall spruces and old trees, which create cool shade.
In the east of the garden there is a large picturesque lake. A path leads to it through a fountain surrounded by blossoming rhododendrons — pink and purple.

In the depths of the garden there is an alley with arches entwined with long vines of Chinese wisteria — a tree-like liana. And if you do not know where to walk in Kaliningrad in June — stroll along the blossoming alleys of the Botanical Garden, and you will find not only coolness but also inspiration.

The garden has many benches, clean paths and secluded corners.
The Kaeber memorial stone

One of the garden’s sights is the Kaeber memorial stone (Kaeber-Stein). It was erected in honour of Paul Kaeber — a German botanist and teacher who founded the botanical garden at the Albertina. The stone was set up as early as the pre-war period as a token of gratitude for his contribution to science and gardening.
After the war it survived and still stands in its place — as a reminder of Kaliningrad’s Prussian history and of the scientific continuity preserved through the centuries.
