Where to eat in Kaliningrad: museum-restaurant “Dom Tekhniki”
With signature cuisine and a unique atmosphere
Restaurant “Dom Tekhniki” (House of Technology) is in the very centre of the city, in the “Epicentre” shopping complex.
A little history… In the 1920s many business delegations came to Königsberg from all over Europe. Their goal was to visit the East Prussian Fair. These fairs became popular over time and it was decided to build a purpose-built building. And in 1925 the city saw the biggest structure of its time — the House of Technology. The building, part of the Fair complex, stood in ruins for more than fifty years and was restored as a shopping centre only in the 2000s. Red clinker brick and stylish sculptures — now we can admire these splendours.
I had not booked a table, but I was lucky — I found a cosy spot by the bar counter. A few guests were having dinner in the restaurant, and one group was celebrating a birthday.
You can get into the restaurant “Dom Tekhniki” both from the shopping centre and through a separate entrance opposite the pedestrian zone on Professora Baranova Street. In front of the entrance there is a covered summer terrace and an exhibition of retro cars.
The owners decided to support the historical concept not only in the name: vintage items, decorative objects and a retro convertible in the middle of the restaurant adorn the interior. There is no single overall style. Modern classics with antique and vintage household items, musical instruments and books. Two halls: the main one with leather sofas and armchairs, and a separate banquet hall.
The menu is small: the main emphasis is on European cuisine. A mix of popular dishes: borscht and tom yum, pasta and steaks.
Starters, a grill menu and German draught beer. It was noted that the beer has its own peculiarities of taste, but everything comes straight from Germany; the waitress also recommended the signature desserts.
My attention was caught by burrata with strawberry soup and caramel. A delicate cheese pouch with cream and stracciatella inside, framed by purée and fresh strawberries. In my opinion the creamy cheese was made totally anonymous by this dessert-style presentation. Each part is good on its own, but they do not add up to a finished dish.
The second course was pasta — pappardelle with beef cheek. Wide ribbons of pasta with braised beef cheeks. The rich meaty taste of stewed beef with demi-glace sauce and champignons goes superbly with the dense flavour of egg pasta.
But the dessert won me over — the Napoleon. The cake is made to the classic recipe by all the canons. Crisp, flaky layers of puff pastry and delicate creamy custard with a hint of vanilla. I ordered a cappuccino with the dessert.
I want to note the work of the waitress — a pleasant and competent young woman. She told me about the dishes, the work and the history of the place. She was attentive and friendly.
Dinner here cost me about 2,000 ₽ with a generous tip. Overall impression: not a bad place for a business meeting or lunch (the restaurant has a special lunch offer), suitable for corporate events or family banquets.
Decent cuisine at reasonable prices. It will be interesting for visitors to the city who are hunting for eel, stroganina and draught beer.
